Uwe Assignment Submissions Manager

Once you have made your submission, you must verify that it was successful by carrying out both of the following checks:

  1. Check the details on the Review Submission History page.
  2. Check the Submission Receipt on the Coursework tab and make sure that you can open the files you attached.

Review Submission History page

When you submit an assignment in Blackboard, you will see a message on a green background at the top of the screen which states "The submission is complete. It is essential that you now review your receipt from the Coursework tab".

The details of your submission will be displayed, including links to any files you attached. You must then check your Submission Receipt, as described below.

Submission Receipt

The ‘Coursework’ tab will display a Submission Receipt for any submissions you have made to a Blackboard assignment.


  • If your file is corrupt or empty, ie it is 0 bytes, you will see a red exclamation mark next to the receipt date. When you open your receipt, you will also see a red message telling you that the file appears to be blank. If you see this message you must re-submit your whole submission
  • If you have used invalid characters in your filename, you will see a red exclamation mark next to the receipt date. When you open your receipt you will also see a red message telling you that a file was not uploaded because it contains invalid characters. If you see this message you must remove any invalid characters from all files and re-submit your whole submission.

Your Submission Receipt will contain the following:

  • Submission reference: a specific reference number allocated to you on submission.
  • Student Name: your name.
  • Student Number: your student number.
  • Assignment ID: the identifying code of the assignment.
  • Assignment Title: the name of the assignment.
  • Course code: the code of the course which contains the assignment.
  • Course title: the title of the course which contains the assignment.
  • Date and Time of Submission: the date and time of your submission (as recorded by the Blackboard server). All times are UK time.
  • File: the filename and size of the item you uploaded.
    Please note that if the course is still available to students, the filename will be a link to the document. If the course is unavailable to students, the filename is displayed but will no longer be a link.
  • Submission Text: If you have entered anything in the ‘Write Submission’ option e.g. text or a mashup, this will be presented to you via a Submission Text.html link so that you can view in a web browser.
  • Submission Comments: Any text you entered in the Comments field.
  • Print: Click the Print button to print a copy of your receipt.
  • Email: Click the Email button to receive an e-mail version of the receipt. The e-mail will be sent to your UWE e-mail address. It is not possible to have this e-mail sent to any other e-mail account, so please make sure that your UWE Live Mail in box is not full. The sender will appear as ‘norepy.learning.systems@uwe.ac.uk’ and the subject will be ‘Submission Receipt’. Please allow up to 1 hour for delivery during peak times. If you do not receive the e-mail receipt within 24 hours, please contact Learning & Research Systems.

Kaltura submissions

If you have attached Kaltura content to your submission you will be able to view this on the receipt via the Submission Text.html link.

If it is only the Kaltura content that you have added to your submission, you will see a warning message on the Coursework tab to indicate that no files are attached but the Kaltura content itself will be visible via the receipt. The warning message relates to file attachments that you browse to rather than mashup content.

What to do if you notice a problem

Please check our Things to be aware of before submitting guidance. If you still believe there is a problem with the recording of your submission, please forward on your e-mail receipt to learning.systems@uwe.ac.uk.

If you believe you have made a mistake with your submission and the deadline has already passed, please contact an Information Point for advice.

The Coursework tab provides students with a complete overview of their Blackboard assignments including their submission receipts; their marks and feedback from instructors, all in one table view.

As soon as an assignment is available for submission, it will appear to you on the Coursework tab. Whilst the assignment is available for submission, there will be a clickable link directly into the assignment.

Who to contact should you have a query

Problems submitting your assignment or accessing your receipt - please contact the ITS Helpdesk on 0117 3283612, or e-mail Learning & Research Systems with details of the issue.

If you believe you have made a mistake with your submission and the deadline has already passed, please contact an Information Point for advice.

Queries about your mark or feedback - Please check that the mark in your MarkingRecord.txt corresponds with the mark in Blackboard. If there is any discrepancy or if you have a different query about your mark or feedback, please contact your course instructor.

How is this different to the myUWE Coursework tab?

Online submissions through Blackboard will also be displayed on the Coursework tab in myUWE. However, the myUWE Coursework tab will also display submissions where you are expected to submit in hard copy with a downloadable coversheet from myUWE.

The Blackboard Coursework tab ONLY displays online submissions through Blackboard.

Take Note

  1. The Assignment Name is a clickable link available from the start date and time, up to the end date and time (this includes the 24 hour late submission period). All times are UK time.
  2. The most recent submission made will be a link under Submission Receipts - from there you will be able to check the file(s) you attached.
  3. If you have made more than one submission to an assignment, you can select to Show Previous Submissions to see your earlier submissions. ONLY the latest submission made will be assessed.
  4. The mark is against the latest submission you made
  5. Any text based feedback from your instructor
  6. A link is provided to any feedback documents attached by your instructor plus a MartingRecord txt file.

Availability of information contained in the Coursework tab

Courses which contain Blackboard assignments will be listed on this tab if you have an enabled enrolment on the module. Even if your instructor has made the course unavailable to students, you will still be able to view your submission receipts, your marks and any feedback for the course assignment, up to the point where your enrolment becomes disabled.

Important - Your enrolment on a module is automatically disabled 100 days after the Field Board date, or if you are a final year student, you lose access to UWE systems 42 days after you complete your award.

It is your responsibility to save any feedback you have received through the Coursework tab before your module enrolment or your UWE systems access ends. For non-completed students, it is possible to store feedback (and other files) in your personal Content Collection in Blackboard. Late submissions

Any submissions within the 24 hour window will be subject to a marks penalty. The marks you see listed in Blackboard are unconfirmed and BEFORE any penalties have been applied.
